This week we were introduced to the 3d scanner and the two printers --the Z Corp and the Stratasys. For this assignment I chose to create my own shape as opposed to using an existing object. I molded a tooth (molar) out of plasticine. I then placed it on a rotating disk which allowed the scanner to capture the object from every side.
When the image appeared on the screen, it had obvious holes in the ares that the scanner could not capture. I filled the holes, and then smoothed out the surface with the various tools offered in the program (Geomagic Studio). The image of the tooth was then exported to both the Z Corp and the Stratasys printers.
Unfortunately the Stratasys somehow broke down, preventing the production of one of the models. Luckily it was a good week for the Z Corp which managed to print one full tooth, and the half of another. I mounted the latter on a piece of acrylic and molded some red plasticine around the base to offer the illusion of gums.
