week 10: Composites

 

 

For this week we had to choose a fiber material and a resin, cement, etc to make a resistant thin composite.

I decided to continue with what I was doing for molding/casting week and generate a curved surface using Hydrostone and fabric with embedded LEDs.


I created the mold with pink styrofoam using the ShopBot.

 

 

Then painted the mold with gesso.
 

 

I used 4 layers of pink elastic fabric an put the LEDs between the second and third layer leaving the cables to the outside so I could connect them later to a battery, and vacuum it.
In the end the LEDs did not work (I do not know if they got spoiled with the Hydrostone or the light could not be seen from the outside).
