week 2: press-fit kit

For the press-fit kit I focused on two things:
- the relationship between “main components” and “connectors”
- the spaces that could be created using the pieces of the kit.

The Problem
I decided I wanted to create a system of pieces where the difference between main component and connector was well defined and were this could be use to generate space models. The main component would, at the same time, virtually enclose space and be very transparent, so it let you look inside.

I started by modelling it in AutoCAD to study some possibilities and got to the shape of the cross to give structure in the center and free the corners so relationships between spaces can be very open and designers/players can see inside and through spaces.

3 main components, 5 types of connections (for joining 2, 3 and 4 components)

How
At first I started designing a kit that would only have one main component (the cross) and various connectors that would join crosses in different angles (60°,90, 108°,180°), but that didn’t give the freedom that the system needed so I decided to make variations to the main component. This developed in a system of 3 main connectors –a cross, a tee, and an angle- and orthogonal connectors that can connect 2, 3 and 4 components.

basic configuration: the cube

Problems encountered:
When connecting two main components to each other without the use of a connector there is a change of the measure of the constant module that has to be analyzed in order for it not to generate a problem in the system of additions.
The 4 parallel connector also introduces a change in the rhythm of the modules.

other possible configurations

Possible Improvements:
Generate a straight main component.
Generate a 3D connector.
Generate a 5 component connector
Use a more rigid material than corrugated cardboard (introducing chamfered angles)
