Modella projects
Guitar pick
After cutting the copper away from a circuit board in 0.1mm increments, I wondered if the Modela would cut silver nicely. I had a small piece of 1 mm silver sheet, which I made as flat as possible. With double stick tape, I affixed the metal to the sacrificial layer. I found an image of a 17 point star, scaled it in the Modela mod to fit the metal, and attempted to draw a tool path for the 1/32″ bit. I had to lie to the module about the size of the bit, making it very small so it would follow the path. I then took a 0.1mm cut, which went well, with a clean cut surface. I repeated that cut for another 0.1 mm in depth. I tried a 0.2 mm cut, which loaded the motor and left a rougher finish. To clean that up, I cut one more 0.1 mm down for the final pass. I removed the inscribed sheet, and placed a quarter over the star, and marked the edges with a Sharpie. I freehanded the extended edge. Using a sheet metal shear, I roughly trimmed the metal to the edge of the Sharpie line, followed by a belt sander to net shape. I polished the pick with white compound on a buffing wheel, thinning the end slightly. The cut pattern gives the surface a tooth, making it easy to hold.
