Where Emilee Johnson Tries to Make Almost Anything

3D Printer Week

So this week the project assignment was to print something on one of the many 3D printers available in the labs. I chose to use the Dimension 3D printer to make an iPhone 5 case personalized with my name and an USMC Eagle, Globe and Anchor. Overall it turned out very well. The design translated fine and the ABS was a good choice for flexibility needed to bend it enough to fit into a case but also firm enough to act as a casing.

Project 03a
Here's a model of what I chose to print this week. Basically I used the Makerbot software on Thingiverse to develop an iPhone5 case. I used Inkscape to trace the USMC Eagle, Globe and Anchor design that I put on the back of the case.
Project 03b
First shot of the finished product. It went pretty well. The case clearly fits. It was pretty snug but could probably be a bit tighter of a fit. I think with a rubber sleeve like what Otterbox uses it would be perfect.
Project 03c
Image of the finished case without the iPhone in it. I lost South America somewhere in the print process unfortunately. I think that the isthmus was too narrow and it broke off with the support material. I didn't know at the time that it dissolves, and the bath was broken anyway, so I actually chipped it all out by hand.
Project 03d
Another shot of the case without the iPhone in it.
