Let me start by summarizing in a nutshell this week's ride:
The vacuum pump was smoking from the beginning. We ask to some of the TA's around and said that that was ok. After a few hours, we came back and the smoke was even worse and it was not creating a vacuum in the bag. Time for a back up plan, given the high utilization rate of the only vacuum pump expected in coming days.
The back up plan has to do with what I am thinking for final project. I would like to evolve a little bit from what I made for "Make something big week" a coffee table. Now, using composites, in this case quickrete, I planned for doing a table top.
The table top required a mold. Tacking together a number of pieces of wood served the purpose.
Very important is to add a rebar structure to add strength to the slab. This in close resemblance to what the kevlar does when is placed in several different directions.
After mixing the quickrete and poring into the mold, I waited for 24 hours to let it cure. It was not enough but I had to rush it to submit the assignment.
The result was a nice night table for my bedroom.
