How to Make (Almost) Anything

Project 1: The Better Bike Helmet

Background: I ride my bike through rain, snow, and sunshine. The rain, snow and sleet often blind me if I'm riding into them. As the winter nears and the sun rises later and sets earlier, I also need better lights to be seen by cars and other vehicles.

The goal of this project is to sketch out a design for our final project in this class. My goal is to develop a better bicycle helmet that has improved lighting and a way to deflect the various weather that may cut visibility. This is one all-weather helmet that inspired some of my design.

Software used: I tried several softwares. While I know my way around the Adobe suite, 3D software is a new experience for me. I started with AutoCAD and then read many complaints against using it for 3D fabrication. Then, in luck, AutoDesk released AutoDesk Fusion 360, which seems to be their cross platform version of SolidWorks. This helped a lot as I'm a Mac user and am trying to hold off on partitioning my harddrive. Autodesk Fusion seems to be relatively user friendly. As of September 2014, it still has a number of bugs -- but it seems like it'll be fixed soon enough.
