An Interactive Night Light For Kids

Interactive Night Light
The purpose of the night light is to help kids get over their fear of monsters. Kids all over the world are afraid of the dark and usually their fear stems from the belief that monsters live under their bed. A typical reaction by these kids is to ask their parents to check and make sure there are no monsters. So my project would essentially replace the parent in this situation

Exploded View How It Works

The night light is placed under the bed and it's attached to a remote that the kid can easily reach. Everytime the kid gets scared he presses a button and the night light (in the shape of a robot) activates and notifies the little kid that it's checking beneath the bed for monsters. After a short period it reports that no monsters were found. During this process it makes noise and lights up to make the little youngster feel safe.

The outer shell would be made of plastic and would house a microcontroller that's used to drive several LED's and a small speaker. The microcontroller receives input from the romote control allowing the little kid to activate the system and check for monsters. The microcontroller would be programmed with multiple media files that are used to reassure the user.

The Benefit

Ideally this device would help kids learn to deal with their fears without depending on their parents and it would condition them to understand that monsters don't exist.

It's better than a normal night light since it interactively addresses the root of the fear.

Even after the little kid gets over his/her fear of monsters he/she can still use the device as a neat under-bed light. The design has several settings to allow personalization of the night light to meet anyone's needs.
