Laser and Vinyl Cutting

This week was all about computer-controlled cutting.

  • Project: Make a press-fit construction kit.
  • Tools: Vinyl Cutter, Laser Cutter

To get used to the vinyl cutter, I made some stickers of Roadkill Buffet(my improv troupe)'s mascot, Splat. I got a .png image from our publicity person, then used CutStudio to turn the image into a cut path and cut the vinyl. After weeding the cut, I transferred the vinyl to adhesive paper and stuck it to my laptop.

Laptop Sticker!

For the main project this week, I conceptualized a cardboard "potted plant" with "plants" that can be switched out on a seasonal basis (Christmas trees, bushes, cacti, etc.) I did a basic sketch of a press-fit box and tree in SOLIDWORKS then used global variables to make all the tabs one easily changeable width/depth. This paid off later when I had to resize the slots to account for the width of the laser. To laser-cut the pieces, I exported the SOLIDWORKS files as .dxf, opened them in Corel Draw, and printed them on the Epilog laser in the IDC shop.

I'd like to make some more plant attachments (possibly out of acrylic) in the future when I'm less busy trying to build a website.
