Week 3: 3D Printing + Scanning
3D Printing
The assignment for this week was to 3D print something that wouldn’t be possible (or at least would be very difficult) to make using a different CNC machine from this course. This was my first time ever 3D printing, so I wasn’t entirely sure where to start, or what to make. I decided to stay consistent with my previous project and make some sort of wearable body prosthetic.
I messed around with a few things in Rhino before I decided to make the leaf frames.
Rhino Model
First step, getting my file ready for Makerbot
It’s printing
First round, I forgot to make the right side of the leaf air tight so I got a filled in effect. So I decided to fix my rhino model and try again.
This time it’s working to plan
Success!
And the final protoype #leafy
3D Scanning…
Is extremely sensitive and requires steady movements and patiences. I experimented with many objects, but they didn’t work for various reasons (camera skew, shiny surfaces, movement) I’ve included some of the worst below.
