UNICORN WINE RACK

The assignment for this week was to make something big, so I combined two of my favorite things - unicorns and wine.

__Work Flow

Step 1 I modeled the unicorn in Modo, and then I brought it into rhino to splice and nest. The initial wine bottle holes I created in modo made the splicing of my model pretty much un-constructible, so I took them out, and figured I would add them after the cnc process.

Step 2 Next stop was good ol’ Home Depot, I bought (2) 4’ x 8’ pieces of 11/32” birch plywood.

Step 3

Step 1 Day 1 of CNC went so-so, my cuts did not go all the way through my boards and the consistency of the tabbing thickness also seemed to be varied. I was able to get 1 of my 4 boards milled.

Step 1

Step 1 Since my pieces didn’t come out as I had planned I became a master of the tools in the GSD woodshop - jigsaw, bandsaw, drill press, spindle sander and belt sanders all came to my rescue.

Step 1 Day 3 with the ShopBot was my best day yet, I finally got all my boards milled and my cuts were on point! Thanks to the help of Daniel & Rob I was able to salvage a piece of the unicorn that I lost due to stopping the bot the day before, we were able to get the perfect alignment and all the correct measurements and the cuts came out great.

Step 1 With all the pieces finally cut out the unicorn started taking up most of my studio space and my buttmates as well…

Once I had everything cut and cleaned up it was time to make the holes for the wine bottles.

Step 1 The final steps - drilling my wine holes with the drill press and finally putting it all together. My slits worked well, a very snug fit though, lots of hammering, muscles, and positive words - luckily I was able to get Adam’s help.

Step 1 I’m Done! (This is probably the most magical thing I have ever created)

My finished unicorn is made up of 37 individual pieces, and stands tall at 44” (from hove to top of horn) and is just under 43” long (nose to tail), and of course can hold 3 bottles of wine.
