Machine that Makes

For the Machine that Makes project, I was part of the CBA section. On the first meeting, I cut the metal bars for the re-configurational stages and helped folding and glueing the stage components together for assembly.

Our section decided to make a cake licking machineI and I was part of the end-effector team, i.e. the tongue team. We had our intial meeting on the design ideas and I documented the meeting notes on the group page. On 12/1/15, I received the wax mold from another member of the end-effector team and casted the silicone tongue with the wax mold with a screw inside. I chose a 1/4 20x2'', 3/16 screw so that it would be long enough to be fixated in the silicone tongue and there would be enough length to be connected to the final machine's actuator. For molding, Ani had Draon Skin Silicone Rubber so I used it. I mixed the two materials in 1:1 ratio and I fixated in the middle until the rubber cured. While I was mixing the materials, it felt a lot stickier than Oomoo and it seemed as if the bubbles had hard time getting out to the surface even when I tapped the mold onto the desk many times. After 6 hours of curing, I took off the wax mold and it looked like this!
