Week 1: Proposed Final Project

Me

Proposal

I would like to begin by introducing one of theses projects. It come from a larger series called “cacoon” /kǝku:n/ . This body of work is an intersection of interactive narrative, user experience, design and fine arts ( the difference between fine arts and design to be debated later) Primary the attempt in this class is to create a min one 8 tp 10 inch tall connect sculptures based off the paper prototypes indicated in the photos above. The Sensors inside would primary use LED and accelerometer to receive and transmit visual and physical information. The hope is to have two Kinect sculptures that communicate with one another. Where the larger of the two sculptures triggers the smaller to either flash with lights and/open. These are just a few of the idea i have come up with or have found on my own for the mechanism i would use to have the petals open. The 7 to 9 petal would require a to replicate a mechanical iris like structure, i suspect attached to a servo motor that is accepted by a accerometor or speaker and mic (currently, i use a an adafruit playground board. it has a number of sensors that i use, however it isis not bluetooth capable or any means of radio transmission). The hope is that the flower will open to reveals it inside with the right kind of input, and will transmit information between the to flowers to create an interactive art pieces. the UX/UI has yet to be solidified, however one the mechanic and tech is completed and working i can device the right UI between multiple units of flowers.

Here you see my very first attempts to prototyping the opening mechanism for the iris like Kinect sculpture. I based this idea of one of the technical moving objects from 507 Mechanical Movements website, after seeing one of the animated gifs in action. The idea here was that pins on the base would follow the tracked moments of the spiral at different possessions, moving the petals forward and backward. I abandoned the experiment when I realized i had two perfect examples of what i wanted to accomplish. One was my large formate view finder camera. Cameras rely on light tight technical iris mechanism that open and close. That is why on week 3 you will see my construction of a laser cut wooden iris. I know that this project would require the use of gears, what kind and at what angel i have to decide. but I suspect 7 small half bevel gears connected to on larger gear motorized by a servo motor will get the desired results. however , hinges or jointed/ curved arms like that of a bus door might have a smilier desired result. So far i have yet to experiments, my hope is to do so with the final project.
