Week 3. 3D Printing & Scanning

I wanted to explore linkages and gears. I like the work of Theo Jansen and his Strandbeests.

I first explored a bunch of different linkages on the program Linkage to test some sample mechanisms. I approximately re-created Jansen's mechanism here:

I attempted to make a parametric design of a gear, but when I tried to design an interlocking partner, I could not get them to mesh properly.

In my second attempt I created some smaller gears so that they could be spun while being held in a hand.



My first print was stuck together because I had not given the gears enough clearance in my design.




With more clearance it worked!



We also did a test print:
