Week 2

I wanted to cut something animal-related. Like Mr. Potato Head, what if you could take the different parts of what make an animal an animal, and rearrange them? What new animals could you make?

A quick vinyl cut of a ball of yarn. I like the vinyl cutter when it works--the blade can really make clean and detailed cuts. However, maybe I'm not setting it up correctly because it doesn't always behave for me.

The first step this week was characterizing the lasercutter through testing. The cardboard measured about 3/16" in thickness, but the lasercutter kerf came out to about 0.19" at the settings I used for cutting the cardboard. I adjusted my CAD file to account for this kerf. I wasn't able to figure out Grasshopper in time for this assignment, but I'd like to become more proficient at using it for parametric design.

For this week's assignment, I cut the bodies, limbs, heads, tails, and various connection pieces of a variety of animals. Here are a cat and a dinosaur. The tails and limbs are interchangeable, so it's possible to build your own creature in any number of combinations.

I wanted to try fantastical creatures, so I added wings to a dog.
