WEEK 2: Computer-Controlled Cutting

Individual assignment: cut something on the vinylcutter, design, lasercut, and document a parametric press-fit construction kit, accounting for the lasercutter kerf, which can be assembled in multiple ways.

I tried FreeCad and Fusion3D and ended up going with Fusion3D. Fusion seemed a but more intuitive and FreeCard has a steeper learning curve. I've never done parametric design so it took some time getting used to workflow. I did numerous online tutorials and ended up creating and cutting a polygon shape.

We had to do a shop demo in order to access the laser cutter. It seems one can start more readily with this machine compare to other machines in the shop. You have to be attentive to the machine while it's cutting just in case small fires start.

The kit can be easily transported...

and assembled..

Created a vinyl sticker using a Bridget Riley image. It was a bit delicate but could be stuck on something as one piece.
