josh makes things
I create work in public space, through collaboration and demystification of the artistic process. For the past 30 years I have worked with dozens of community arts organizations, arts commissions, universities, airports, schools, restorative justice programs, homeless shelters, recreation centers, libraries and municipalities on over 60 mosaics, murals and Parklets in the US and abroad. I studied art and community organizing in the streets, by iterating process and approach, while learning about new techniques and technologies with each commission.
I have developed a repertoire of media including fiber arts, earth and clay construction, CNC metal and wood, glass and ceramic mosaic and some LED lighting. I was a research affiliate with Social Computing at the Media Lab, from 2014-2017, design/building modular parklets for reclamation of public space. I am interested in how technology, group genius and heart- centered creativity can be leveraged to reduce suffering and violence. The democratization of technology, and access to making with our hands, I have found to be universal expressions of joy and of our shared humanity.
