Vigyan Ashram FabLab Web Blog

This is a Web blog for Vigyan Ashram. What does it do? How to use it? Simple.. Rather than writing emails to one person or many, just type your queries, questions, problems right here. That way everybody can read this and respond back here itself. So just look back for an answer at the same link. Slowly we will move all the relevant old emails sent to fabfolk at media dot mit dot edu here. You can also update everybody with the progress in your latest project, put a small thumbnail here as a teaser and what not. We will add a search tool here if the tool gets used enough.

So get Blogging. Follow this format while creating your blogs.

This is the first blog of the site. Try making more blogs here just to see if you have gotten used to the site tool. To get started, go to http://fab.cba.mit.edu and the site link. It will ask you for a passwd which you all already know. Now a shell appears and you can browse just like in a linux shell. Go to the right directory and use edit xyz.html to create a new file. You can write up your html file in the editor and hit save. Click on "save with link for editing" if you want to put a "edit" link on the page itself for easy modification of the page by others.

Subject:Writing text in sdraw that is acceptable to cam.py
So I promised to give you the secrets of writting text in sdraw and importing it inside cam. Here it is. Open sdraw using either graphical menu or typing "sdraw" in a terminal. Choose the text tool in sdraw to write anything you want. Choose the write font of your liking and size. Select the text; now go to modify and choose convert to -> Polygon. You should also see the line type on the top margin just below the usual toolbar. Change the line type to continuous. Thats it. choose the portions you want to export and export as "xyz.svg". Open cam from a login shell and type your filename.svg. Do an autoscale and gooodness gracious, your text is in there. Make those motorcycle halmets saying "mevrick" :).

Material like wood acrylic cardboard, glass to make press fit box & show case ---- and trying to make some gift articles. 3) Engraving photos, sculpture, text on glass, leather, acrylic, wood & bamboo to make gift articles & name plates.
B) USING MODELLA (MDx-20) MILLING MACHINE 1) Printing various electronic circuits on PCB. 2) Engraving 3D text on wax, marble, plastic, etc. 3) Engraving 3D objects.

USING ROLAND (CAMM1-cx24) MACHINE

1) Printing number plate & logos for 2&4 wheeler vehicle of local villagers. 2) Cutting venial in desired text format for screen-printing. Currently we are printing logo & text on T-shirt.
D) OTHER ACTIVITIES
.

1) Training to the student. 2) Our student acquires the contract from local villagers to make Number plates for their vehicle & Nameplate for on their homes. 3) Lower KG student (School student) are making color clay object (Ex. Mouse, elephant, snake & Ganpati-god etc.). By using the Network camera we are taking the photos of these object, finally these photos are using as a frame for animation. 4) Girl's are making new design of garment.
E) PROJECT WORK.
1) MILK CHARECTORIZER/TESTOR

This is small size electronic m/c, which predict when the milk will decompose, fat content & presence of adult-ants in it. So far we have printed the PCB-circuit using the MODELA machine. All circuit work has completed. What is to be done? ---Loading the program in microprocessor and circuit activation. ---Calibration. These two works have left
2) CALORIMETER

This machine displays amount of hemoglobin present in the blood in digital display. We on need to place the test tube containing blood sample in this machine, and then we can see the data on digital display. Balance work of this Project: ---Loading the Assembly Language program in microprocessor, to activate the circuit ---Cal liberation.
3) LED-LAMP & LED-TORCH

LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamp is a low cost & Low power consuming lamp which convert almost all electrical energy into light instead of light & heat. Two LED lamps replaces one 40Watt lamp. Using Laser machine we are cutting PCB in desired shape & size, & then we print the lamp circuit on the cut PCB, finally soldering these LED on circuit. In our Market these bulb costs Rs. 150/lamp, but we are producing it at Rs. 90/. Similarly we are making LED Torch, which is also making available at very low cost.

E) PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED E) # PROJECT RELEATED PROBLEM

1) Can we cut the SOLAR PANNEL PLATE( Silicon Plate) on laser machine? 2) How to load the program into the Microprocessor /circuit from computer to circuit using Knoppix operating system. 3) In Calorimeter project we want to high intensity light source, so Where can we get the list of this light source & their sensor? 3) Can we cut the SOLAR PANNEL PLATE( Silicon Plate) on laser machine?
# MACHINE RELATED PROBLEM 1) How to add the Laser Printer (drivers) on Knoppix Operating system so that we can able to print drawing file on laser machine,But now we are unable to print any Open office drawing file on Epilog laser machine. 2) How to install Auto-Cad, Pro-e, and etc. design software on Knoppix system. 3) How to write the DVD on Knoppix machine. 4) How to install the Knoppix (operating system) where can we get the detail notes?

G) LOCAL VILLEGER’S DEMAND & SUGGESTION. 1) They want no. Plates of radium for their 2-wheeler & 4- wheeler vehicle.---We are making these no. Plates using Roland CMMM-1 machine. 2) Engraved marbles with different design & 3D –text format. 3) Shopkeepers, Tailors wants Engraved leather logos for advertising purpose. 4) Gears with different profiles and sizes of Photocopy machine. 5) They want some agricultural equipment and sowing machine, manually operated water-lifting pumps. 6) Many people demanding LED-LAMPS to reduce the power consumption & cost, they are looking forward as a alternative to Electrical tubes & lamps.

Low Cost LED BULB, TABLE LAMP & TORCH

Recently we could able to make low cost Led lamp, torch, Headlights, and Study lamp
for the students & farmers of our countryside using Laser machine & Modella milling Machine.
The Study lamp will cost $4 /- & the LED lamp would cost $2 /-.
These lamps work on 6V, 12V DC voltage & also work on 230V AC voltage.
Each bulb consumes 4 watt and produces sufficient light to replace Kerosene Lamp in most of our villages.
These Lamps are quite useful to solve our local villager’s “Electricity problem”.
This is the first step toward finding the solution to the community problem by our “Fablab”.

Jewelry Designing in Fablab.

Two local Girl’s Guddi & Chitra joined our fablab.
They are teaching Jewelry designing to the Girl’s who are studying “Diploma in Basic Rural Technology” in Vigyan Ashram.
In fablab these girls are using the Tools (e.g. Cutter’s & Pliers etc) and the “Art & Craft stuff” provided by Sherry.
This little effort by these local girl’s are helping to setup self employment-small business for the
Girl’s studying in Vigyan Ashram. These girl’s are willing to setup
jewelry designing work at their villages and they will their product in local market.
Design Samples of Jewelry 1) Earrings, 2) Necklaces & 3) Bras elate.
Also these girls are interested in Arts & Crafts so they are taking the training of Laser cutter & Vinyl cutter.
Rangoli Templates (Used to welcome the guest in Indian culture).

T-shirt Designing& Screen Printing

Vigyan Ashram student also learning the “ T-Shirt Designing & Screen Printing Work” in the Fablab.
They are making their “Own Design” for their T-shirt.
These students cut the Vinyl on “Vinyl Cutter –Roland CAMM-1” machine in desired shape & the cut
portion of vinyl is used to make the screen for printing their “Design” on T-shirt.
The SCRIN PRINTING also emerging as a small-scale business in the villages.

Acrylic Screen-printing Exposing Box-Using laser cutter:

Vigyan Ashram student-Amit have made screen printing box, Vigyan Ashram students wants to use this
box for making the Business Card & Screen Printing by exposing method.
