Composites

Birthday Celebration!

My professor brought to studio some bottles of port because it was his birthday. I liked how the bottles looked. I thought it might be nice to use these as the moulds for the composites.

I lasercut a long strip of white felt, and used voronoi method from grasshopper ot make some holes. The idea is to wrap this around the bottle several times. Not only would there be porosity, but the layers of the fabric would strenghten itself so that the shape would be able to hold itself up.

Prepping the materials. I wrapped the bottle with the film and sprayed epoxy-release on it.

Mixing epoxy resin, 2 to 1 ratio.

Spreading the resin over the felt. After wrapping the felt over the bottle, I wrapped it with another film which was perforated with little holes. Then I wrapped it the whole thing with the layer of the bleeder fabric. Unfortunately I couldn't take pictures of the process since my hands were so resin-y.

Putting it in the vacuum bag! Four hours here we go.

Getting it out from the vacuum bag.

It was hard to get off, so I had to cut it.

The light looks nice, translucent. The material kind of looks like a translucent jade.
