3D PRINTS [Chainmail]

Inspiration

All of the 3D Printed Fabrics. Nervous System.

Goal

+ Understand the constraints of designing interlocking arrays

+ Develop an efficient workflow for designing interlocking arrays

+ Print an array of interlocking objects that has the flexibility of fabric

Bonus

+ Print a dense cube of material that unfolds into a large 2D array

+ Develop parametric generator that propogates and distorts one dynamic input object

Design

The 3D geometry was generated with Rhinocerose. The process started with a torus with a girth of 2 mm (the minimum suggested wall thickness), and an inner radius large enough to accomodate 4 interlocking rings of the same girth.

I continued playing around with the design, and was able to scale up the cube, resulting in a much larger sheet of chainmail.
