TERRA INCOGNITA








A PROSTHETIC KNEE IS IMMERSED IN A SILICON BAG OF OIL, IT STANDS DISEMBODIED IN A ROOM WITH A PROJECTED IMAGE. IT IS AN INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION WHERE VIEWERS CAN NAVIGATE AROUND THE IMAGE LOOKING FOR SNIPPETS OF WORDS, THE MOTION OF THE NAVIGATION TRIGGERS THE PROSTHETIC KNEE TO MOVE.




THE SET UP IS A NOD TO PROSTHETIC WEAR TEST MACHINES, A COMMON PROBLEM WITH IMPLANTED PROSTHESIS IS THAT AFTER SOME TIME THE WEAR AND TEAR RELEASES SMALL PARTICLES CAUSING PARTICLE DISEASE DAMAGING BONE AND LOOSENING THE PROSTHESIS. THE PROJECTED IMAGE IS A HISTOPATHOLOGICAL IMAGE OF FOREIGN BODY RESPONSE TO SMALL PARTICLES. EMBEDDED IN THE IMAGE, ON THE LEVEL OF PIXELS ARE BITS OF WORD OR PHRASES THAT REFER TO WALKING, NAVIGATING, ROAMING, SEARCHING, GETTING LOST. THIS PROJECT IS ALSO THINKING ABOUT MOVEMENT BETWEEN DIFFERENT MODES OF REPRESENTATION, THE MODELS, DIAGRAMS, IMAGES THAT WE USE TO UNDERSTAND THE WORLD. GRAHAM BURNETT CREDITS THE GENERATIVE POWER OF THE MODEL TO THE MUCOSITY (SYNOVIUM/LUBRICIN?) SO GETTING THE BAG WATER TIGHT WAS HARDER THAN I THOUGHT, I HAD FOUR HOLES ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PIECE TO SECURE IT ONTO SOMETHING HEAVIER AND EVENTHOUGH I ADDED O RINGS, SILICONE TAPE, HOT GLUE TO MY SCREWS IT WASNT ENOUGH. SHOULD'VE BEEN MORE PATIENT AND STARTED WITH SILICONE CAULK. IN THE END I USED SILICONE BUT THERE WAS ALREADY OIL ALL OVER THE PLACE.






KIND OF GOT IT WORKING, NEED TO TWEAK MY MOTOR SET UP AND LIGHT SENSOR A BIT MORE.
