Composites

This week I went to Rob's demonstration of composite-making. Composites made with a fabric like canvas, linen, or burlap, and a hard resin are durable, lightweight, watertight, and fairly flexible. This makes them ideal for marine technology and protective gear, among other things. I hoped to try out making a speaker cone out of a linen-resin composite this week, and practiced by making a canvas composite piece on Joe's tessellating tile mold. The process of casting involved painting layers of pre-cut canvas with resin and carefully aligning them on top of each other, on top of the foam mold covered with a quick-release layer of thin plastic. The stack of soaked canvas layers is then covered with a bleed layer of polyester stuffing, placed in a vacum-seal bag, and vacum sealed. We waited a day to open the bag, but 12 hours is probably sufficient.
