Deisgn 3D Model for CNC Milling

This week I used my previous 3D scanned pumpkin for my casting model. Considering the size of wax (88mm x 76mm x 38mm), I made a casted pumpkin model fits in 40mm x 40mm x 40mm. The size allowed me to fit baseplate(6mm), 4 fitting holes(5mm) half pumpkin(20mm), and additional space for injection(6mm) with in 32mm. In Aspire program, I create rough cut and finish cut toolpath for each model.

CNC Milling

I cut wax with 1/8 inch drill bit for both rough and finish cut. During the process wax keep stick on drill bit. As a result, cut surface of was not clean enough after rough cut. I thought it may be cut out during finish cut, thus I run finish cut right after rought cut.

After finish cut, surface of pumpkin was clean. However, four edges for silicon casting was very rough. To smooth pumpkin surface, I used hot air gun.
