Project 2 - Computer-Aided Cutting

This week I tried getting better at Solidworks. I learned how to use a laser cutter and a vinly cutter to make a sticker and a parametric construction kit.

Goals

Class Assignment:

Things I took away from this week

The Play-by-Play

  1. Making a sticker!
  2. The first thing I did was grab a cute png from le internet. I used mods to properly scale the image and send it to the vinyl cutter. I accidentally didn't lock the roll of vinyl into the machine so it moved around and messed up the sticker. I locked the roll in and tried again and he turned out beautifully!
  3. Making the models of the parts
  4. I spent all of Sunday CAD-ing up parts for the parametric construction kit. I thought it would be cool to make an MIT Building 10 model. To do this, I thought to make a geodesic dome (like the ones in Antartica or on Mars rovers) made out of two different types of triangles and a connector. Additionally, I made the parts for the six rectangular sides, the columns, and the part that sits on top of the columns that says Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  5. Actually ~making~ things
  6. I severely underestimated the amount of time that it would take to do this. I was able to cut out the triangles and connectors, but didn't have time for the other parts (alas). The final product ended up being a set of different types of triangles that can connect to each other and with the connector pieces. This was a good lesson to take away, how to pace myself in this class. I want to learn and build cool things, but I am a newbie and shouldn't bite off more than I can chew.
