Wildcard Week: Name Plaque w/ Zund Modular Cutter

For this week, we had the following tasks...

  1. Design and produce something with a digital fabrication process (incorporating computer-aided design and manufacturing) not covered in another assignment

Design

For this week, I used the Zund cutter in the CBA section in the MIT Media Lab, which is an expensive machine with interchangeable parts! I decided to cut a nice name plaque in aluminum for my final project stand. The CAD design was pretty simple...

Cut

Next, Alfonso helped with doing the actual cut! The process was as follows...

  1. Export the dxf file to Rhino for some edits
  2. Lay a cut-protection fabric and the aluminum sheet onto the Zund
  3. Change out the modules for the right one (i.e. the router) and calibrate it
  4. Open the design on the Zund to label for different cuts and parameters
  5. Do the actual cut

And here is the finished result!
