3D Printing
✔️ Test the design rules for your 3D printer(s)
Individual Assignment
✔️ design and 3D print an object (small, few cm3, limited by printer time) that could not be made subtractively
1. Printing Animation
2. Photos
What if a static 3d printed artifact can somehow have the ability to be motional?
3. The Process
1. Animation Calculation
Before 3d modelling, I need to calculate how many model “frames” do I need for each circle.
N = 60/R * F
N: number of model “frames” in a full circle
R: turntable revolutions per minute
F: frame rate, how many frames per second, for both the animation and the video recording devices.
2. Procedural 3D Modeling
The digital model was created in Cinema 4D with it’s procedural MoGraph toolset
3. Visualization Test
4. 3D Printing & Remove the Support
The object is printed with PETG filament material on a Prusa MK3S. The printing process took around 12 hours. The following image shows the 3d printed artifact with support which will be removed later.

5. Shoot the Videos
To make each frame clear, I set the shutter angle to around 11 degrees, which minimizes the motion blur.
