I’ve never used a vinyl cutter before so I definitely devoted more time to it than I did to the laser cutters this week. My first pass was simple; it was a name for my MIT Architecture water bottle that many of my classmates also have.

I generally use cardboard to construct planar objects, so for this assignment I wanted to play around with its use for curved surfaces. When stacked next to each other, the form’s resolution is limited by the thickness of the cardboard and the size of the object. I modeled a parametric box which had a connection of a revolved sin curve

I decided on a final form and decided to cut it at 4 in x 4 in. Our cardboard stock measured .25 in so it required 16 layers to make a square.

I joined each contour cut with a cross shape through the middle. Unfortunately due to some small tolerances that added up, the box didn’t fit together very well at all.
