Week 1: Final Project Initial Design

3D Design with Parameters

For my final project, I am aiming to make a smart nicotine and caffeine patch. This patch would connect to your phone and perform a similar function to an insulin pump except with various forms of substances.

Before I started designing, I began looking at various current insulin patch pump designs. The question kind of became, what would an insulin patch pump have to look like for everyone to want to wear one? That principle guided me in the design process. I still think I have a way to go, but this is my first iteration of spiral development.

I first started by making a base patch that would attach to the skin. I then extruded it out to 20mm. My parameters for the design are listed at the bottom of the page and should be named clearly enough to tell what is what. Next, I added a piece on top of that base patch meant to hold the vials of caffeine and nicotine.

I put two holes into the top part and then extruded with the cut type to make space for the vial.

Finally, I made a similar style intrusion for a needle which would inject the substance into the body. While current nicotine patches have a lot of microneedles on the surface of the sticky part, I used a needle model similar to those in insulin pumps, as shown in the YouTube video here.

Lastly, I made a needle by extruding the space between two circles, which is shown below. Finally, I added some paint to make the appearance look nice.
