Week 14
Wildcard week
I chose to do embroidery this week. To meet the requirements, I designed an embroidery pattern using a digital process and then fabricated it. I started with a photo. Then I thresholded it into 4 colors using adobe illustrator. Next, I used inkscape with the inkstitch extension to convert my vector image into an embroidery pattern where each color spot would be treated as fill by the embroidery machine.
I learned how to use the brother embroidery machine from Alec. He helped me adjust my design to be easier to embroider (less thread changes and smaller). I think the design could've turned out better had I used a slightly different color palette but overall I was pretty happy with how it turned out.
I gave myself a side quest for this week to learn to sew. I took advantage of the sewing trainings offered at Metropolis (a makerspace on campus) and managed to find an open spot. The learning project was a little pencil case. I decided I also wanted to make a jacket. I found a pattern online and got some fabric and just kinda went for it. I made really great progress on the jacket and am happy with how it is turning out. Initially my plan was to embroider the jacket, but the fabric isn't great for embroidery so I'll circle back to that when I have more time.
