Week 3: 3D Printing

Assignment

3d printing/scanning

Project: Birthday Cake Topper!

I wanted to make a custom birthday cake topper for my sister's birthday.

Process

First, I tried using a scanning app on my phone (Polycam) to scan a birthday topper but my phone kept crashing so I pivoted to the printing part. I created the design on Canva, got a PNG, and then pulled it into CAD to create a 3D design. Finally, I 3D printed it at the SEC using a Prusa MK4. The main challenges were:

Here is the final topper (the first two broke).

Happy sister

I surprised my sister with the topper at The Cheesecake Factory and she loved it!

Results

This turned out pretty well. I had to try this out three times because I wasn't getting the thickness right and it was breaking, but I was able to make adjustments in PrusaSlicer. I could have edited the lines to be thicker in Canva/Illustrator before going to printing but I liked the more intricate design.
