Overview
This week, we were tasked with building a machine. In true Media Lab fashion, we picked something very weird and very difficult: a 20-sided machine which actuates its sides to move. Before we get into that, our individual assignment (serving as our midterm) was:
- post a system diagram for your project
- list the tasks to be completed
- make a schedule for doing them
- schedule a meeting with your instructors for a graded review of these and your weekly assignments

Group Assignment
Our group assignment was:
- design a machine that includes mechanism + actuation + automation + function + user interface
- build the mechanical parts and operate it manually
- document the group project and your individual contribution
- actuate and automate your machine
- document the group project and your individual contribution
- prepare a demonstration of your machines for the next class
You can find what our group did to complete it here.
What I Did
Given I was working up until 12:59pm the day it was due, I'm aiming to fill in a lot more shortly, but I'll give a brief overview of each area I assisted in. Our group's main site is located here , which had the larger breakdown of each of our team's work, documentation, final videos, and more. It's also an icosahedron, which is cool.
Project Management
My main role at the beginning was to help organize our group, lead our meetings, and figure out scheduling for the team leads.
Mechanical Engineering
I ended up working quite a bit with the mechanical engineering team as we developed the structure and mechanisms for the machine.
Creative Team
I acted as a documentarian (taking videos of all the groups every day), as well as a producer, director, DP, and editor for our final video.
