Molding and Casting

My Tooth

Designing

This assignment involved several false starts before finding a workable approach. I initially envisioned sculpting an abstract bull, but realized I lacked the skills for organic modeling from a sketch in Fusion 360. My second attempt was a game of jacks, which I slowly realized would require a four or six-part mold, and I was struggling to understand how to do that. When I attempted to mill my test piece, I stopped myself because I was not in the right headspace to work safely. I then pivoted again, opting to cast my tooth in a one part mold.

Mold Making

I accidentally combined Part A of the plaster with Part B of the silicone rubber. Fortunately, I noticed before pouring it into my mold. I mixed it thoroughly and set it aside to observe the curing process, which would help determine the proper disposal methods. I followed Smooth-On's tutorial and had some air bubbles from pouring too quickly. The clay had also dried down leaving some residue on the mold, but it is easy to rinse off with water.

Casting Process

I forgot to add a release agent but was able to remove my object. Otherwise, the process was straightforward and simple with these directions from Smooth-On.

I am really pleased with the finish. It is a bit tacky/rubbery and so is picking up some dust, but it captured fine details. I would really like to go back to this and make a mulitpart mold, and experiment with different materials.
