DOT PLOT - Ideation and CAD

For my final I’d like to make a 3 axis CNC machine that prints/stamps fabric and paper. I’d like to create a device that produces unexpected results and translates abstract data to physical prints. There are many similar existing devices, like pen plotters; however, I’d like to be able to program a repetitive up and down motion (like a stipple) and print with a variety of unconventional media like bleach and generic stamp ink.

This project is inspired by some more distant references including wooden block printing, riso printing, etching, stippling, halftones, and even tattoo machines.

For now, the idea mostly remains as an idea, but I will continue to update this page as I develop the project!

There are many designs for z axis motion for pen plotters out there, but I wanted to design my own using easy to assemble and fabricate planar systems and standard parts that could either be laser cut, waterjetted, or milled easily. I started by taking the dimensions of a servo motor (MG90s) that I would force fit into a piece of metal for easy removal in case I needed to replace it. Some quick research suggested that a servo of this size would be more than adpt to actuate the pen. I wasnt sure about the speed though.

I generally draw and think in 2D which allows me to ensure I'm more accurate about dimensions before 3D modeling it. I used calipers to measure the standard parts because I wasnt sure about the fidelity of the datasheets provided. I designed the actuator to have a removal pen holder that would slide onto the 5mm aluminum stock that's mounted to the linear rail.
