This week I decided to manufacture the elder wand from the Harry Potter series

I found a pretty good, free stl file of a
3D Printed Elder Wand


I then uploaded the file into fusion. The size was too large, and fusion kept on crashing. It had over 230,000 vertices!
Upon Maya's suggestion, I used a STL Compressor, reducing the # of vertices to ~11,000. I then split the elder wand down the middle into 2 parts, created depressions in my stock material, and attached the elder wand to said stock material using the "align" function in Fusion.

With Anthony's help, we decomposed the production into 3 steps. A 1/4 inch round head to dig into the stock material, a 1/8 inch flat head to create details, and a 1/8 inch flat head to do the finishing touches. RPM was set at 18,000. Production Steps

While operating the CNC router, we increased the feed rate to 150% for all rounds. The mold looked like the following.

I then cast the drystone into the mold

The final output though was incredibly fragile, and broke into a few pieces after I took it out. The wand is meant to be at least twice the length as what was specified (and therefore width too), however.

Regardless, the level of detailing is quite impressive and beautiful. Perhaps if I cast this in epoxy or scale up the size the outcome will be better.
