W4: 3D Scanning and Printing.

3D printing do not give us unlimited freedom. It is a game under certain rules.

Aha moments

  • We should be aware of directions in which layers are piled up.

3D Printing

Planning (2:00)

I will make a safety door lock specifically for the entrance door of my apartment room. Our son started to walk around and learned how to turn the door nobs to open doors.

To brainstorm ideas, I grabbed a piece of paper and a pen first and started to sketch objects I came up with randomly. To make sure how actual objects fit to the door nob, I also made a prototype with pieces of paper.

Measured related objects carefully.

Rough sketch of the first idea. (Changed the design later.)

Paper prototyping.

Modeling (3:00)

I usded 123D Design of Autodesk. It took me more than an hour to be familiar with basic operations (move, scale, transform etc) with online tutorial articles.

Lock cover part.

Printing (1:45 + 0:55)

I used Up! by PP3DP. Basically followed the configuration provided by TA.

Loaded .stl file to Up! app.

Printing.

Detaching from the platform.

Detached.

Removed the scaffold.

Testing

It worked fine first.

However, after several attempts, a rectangular part fell off. The connection seemed loose originally. I should look into how these parts are connected in the screen. I glued temorarily and it is working fine for now.

3D Scanning

I used Sense in the West Lab. The figures which are shown in this video are exactly what I would like to make eventually.

Scan a small object

I first tried to scan small objects around the lab table.
I scanned a label printer above.

Resolution was lower than expected. However, buttons are properly convex at least. It was hard to capture plain surfaces without patterns.

Scan human

I wanted to determine how accurate Seense can scan human face/body since I was thinking of send 3D printed figure of our son to grandparents. Again it was hard to capture a face with glasses. It is a bit creepy to see the copy of me rotating around the axes though... I will search for a place where I can use color 3d printer and hopefully would like to get figures of my son.
