Rachel Nations is making (almost) anything.

FabISP

This week's focus was electronics production.

  • Project: Build the FabISP.
  • Tools: Tabletop Mill, Soldering Iron

There was no real design component in this week's build. This was my first time fabricating/working with electronics, so I just used Jean-Francois' tutorials to make sure I didn't screw anything up. I milled the board using the Roland Modela:

Project 01a
Someone nicknamed the Modela.

Using the browser-based fab modules, I milled the traces using a 1/64 bit and the outline using a 1/32 bit.

Project 01b
The milled board.

After milling the board, I assembled the electronic components to get ready to solder. The only problem I had was confusing a 0.1 ohm resistor for a 100 ohm resistor, but that got caught before I started soldering. I took a suggestion from Pauline and used tape to keep track of all the (extremely tiny) components.

Project 01c
(Almost) all of the parts, organized and taped.

This was my first time soldering, so I did some practice on a board that didn't completely mill (the bit broke) first. Once I got the hang of it, I eventually turned out something that looked pretty decent!

The final board!
