This week for Mechanical and Machine Design, I was part of the Harvard team that designed Bobby Jr., a marker writing robot. I was part of the end effector team and mainly assisted in design/ideation, fabrication, and documentation.
Our project wiki can be found here.
Our machine was done using the CoreXY system, which allowed the motors to sit away from the end effector, leaving it ripe for us to create designs for!
I spearheaded the ideation for the end effector, exploring several different proposals for an end effector, like a leadscrew mechanism or a microscope barrel, and then I think it was Bobby who came up with the idea of an actuating rack and pinion where a marker and an eraser actuate on opposite sides of the gear.
We got to work modeling and building the end effector.
I helped with the design and fabrication of the end effector and am happy about how our project turned out. It was fun to work in a group on a project and even as a mechanical engineer it taught me a lot about mechanical design and working in a group.
