My Final Project Idea

## A Sailboat For my HTMAA final project, I am planning on making a **sailboat**. I am a [Laser](https://www.laserinternational.org/blog/2020/01/05/international-laser-class-association-the-past-present-and-future-of-our-class/) sailor and have long been waiting to make a boat of my own. There are many moving parts to a sailboat (eg: the sail, mast, boom, rudder, centerboard, tiller, many sheaths for sail control etc) which make this project challenging. This is not withstanding the outside forces of wind and water currents on the boat. But, at the same time, I also believe this project idea can be iterable and can give me flexibility to build on top it as I learn new prototyping skills and improve my toolkit in this class. These are some of the project directions I am thinking of at the moment: - Autonomous Sailboat: A boat that can sail by itself. This idea has been explored by scientists (including at [MIT's Marine Autonomy Lab](https://oceanai.mit.edu/pavlab/pmwiki/pmwiki.php?n=Robot.Sailboat)) to gather more ocean data and navigate to remote parts of the ocean. - A beginner-friendly sailboat and just a fun vessel: A sailboat with fewer parameters to tune. - Some combination of the above two? - A scaled-down sailboat for pre-regatta tactics and learning: a boat that can send some analytics of local conditions back to the jetty. ### A rough sketch and dimensions ![Rough sketch](../media/rough_sketch.jpg) ### Rough Dimensions Since this boat is going to be modeled after the Laser boat, I am relying on International Laser Class Association (ILCA) class rule measurements with a few modifications to design the sailboat. The following are measurements are not final and I will experiment with the size of the boat in the coming weeks. ![Hull measurements](../media/Hull_measurements.jpg) ![Sail measurements](../media/Sail_measurements.jpg) ![Mast measurements](../media/Mast_measurements.jpg) ### Parametric Design Please look at [final project page](https://fab.cba.mit.edu/classes/863.23/CBA/people/Gauri/final/final.html) for CAD design of the final project.
