Cecilia Marsicovetere

I am Cecilia Stefania Marsicovetere Fanjul, and I know it's long so you can call me Ceci. I am a mechatronics engineer, graduated from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala with magna cum laude honors.

I was part of Quetzal-1, the first Guatemalan satellite. I lead the Electrical Power Susbsystem module as well as helped outI learned a lot of things during this experience, but especially to never give up and to pursue my dreams even when they seem impossible.

I have worked in tech startups as hardware engineer, research and development engineer, Internet of Things (IoT) designer, data scientist, and backend development as a freelance consultant.

My last job was coordinating the D-HIVE, Universidad del Valle’s makerspace. My responsibilities included administration, maintenance and training. I also lead the Women in Engineering program, teaching over two thousand female students in middle school and high school about engineering and empowering them to study engineering degrees that historically have had a large gender gap.

I am a part of the Steering Committee of Quetzal-2 in UVG’s Aerospace Laboratory.

This year, I started my MS in Media Arts and Science, joining the Media Lab and the Space Enabled Research Group. The mission of this group is to research how Space Enabled designs can advance justice and development in Earth's complex systems. This aligned neatly into my passion for engineering and my wish to create real impact in my country and contribute towards social development. In this group, I have joined their efforts in investigating how wax can be used as fuel in outer space.
