week 0

computer-aided design

FreeCAD

I worked on this project around the same time as Week 1 -- I was super lost on ideas coming into the course, and I had to brainstorm for a while. I eventually came up with a gift for the Harvard Mountaineering Club.

Old clubroom

We just left our old space, and we're missing a historic lion head that used to be set into the wall (the University wouldn't let us bring it). I want to work on making a replica with some added functionality (probably seeeeecret).

I wanted to practice using FreeCAD some more, so I put some parameterization and part design to the test (sort of -- I wasn't using too advanced steps). I made a SLIGHTLY complicated sketch for some molding, which helped me learn how to use the construction mode. I didn't pull the shape along a path, but I did practice with boolean operators to make the corners.

I put a couple parts together, with some fun parameterization. I had to use some trig and inverse trig functions to get the axes to align right, or variables in multiple fields to make sure things were evenly spaced. I put a scaling variable in front of the whole thing, so I could accurately use the model for scaling when I know the dimensions of certain things. A few parameters broke, but I fixed it up, and it looked good! The lion head has a placeholder for when I actually scan it, and there will be a bunch more details -- some parts I already have, and some I'd need to make. It feels like a good goal for the final!
