Week 7 - Molding and Casting

How to Make (Almost) Anything - Manolis Zampetakis

The Mobius Strip

Very roughly a surface is orientable if it has two sides so that, for example, is it possible to paint it with two different colours. A sheet of paper or the surface of a sphere are examples of orientable surfaces. A Mobius strip is a non-orientable surface: you can build one with a strip of paper (twist the strip and glue end together to form a ring) and verify that it has only one side: it is not possible to paint it with two colours.

Our goal for this week was to mold and cast a Mobius strip.

Design

We started with the design of the Mobius strip in Fusion 360.

After succeeding in the design we used the Combine tool of Fusion 360 to cut the mold in the appropriate negative shape.

Finally we produced the stl files with the shape that we had to mill using the Roland machine.

Making the Mold

We then used FabModules to machine the machinable wax in order to put in the OOMOO material that will create the mold.

We then prepared the OOMOO material

Finally we put the material into the wax to make the molds.

Casting

For the casting part we prepared the plastic material and put it into the mold.

But unfortunately we tried to open it before it was ready and it broke. We hope we will be able to do the casting correctly later.
