How Oliver Bucklin Made Almost Anything

CNC Milling

I love making furniture, and so I thought it would be fun to try my hand at making a reclining chair. I love the duality of OSB, which is so chunky and ugly, and smooth curves.

I desgned the chair in Rhino/Grasshopper. The linkages are formed by creating a series of intersecting circles, like this.

and after a little logistics, I went to mill the parts.

This was my first mill file. I was so proud I fit it on one sheet, because it meant I could laminate two together.

Here I am setting it up, and it seems to be working!

Pocket cuts look pretty good, but I should have used a down cut bit for that.

Plenty of clearance on that screw!

Alas, nothing is ever as easy as it seems, so I had a few snafus along the way!

I learned to make good tabs so the material doesn't move around. Also that ShopBot software leaves something to be desired. If you have to restart a file, write down which line you were on! When you restart, hit go, turn on the spindle, then hit go again, then you can press cut file from here.

Tried to mill again, twice, but had little snags each time. I still want to finish, but here's this in the meantime, I think you get the picture!
