Week 06: Molding & Casting

Group Assignment

Our group assignment began with a training on molding & casting from Marcello in the CBA Metal Shop.

We went over the general safety of the materials: oomoo is generally safe to use, while the clear resin is dagerous to touch and gives off volatile compounds, so you should use proper PPe and work in a well ventilated area.

We also tried vacuuming the oomoo after its been poured into the mold, but it caused it to overflow.

Another interesting experiment was exploiting the low pot time of the resin to make this gravity defying pour.

Individual Assignment

We got a training on the genmitsu from Alfonso in the CBA Electronics Room.

My first milled mold went smoothly, but I accidentally forgot to plug in the drill during the fine pass of the second mold, leading to some interesting results.

I thought I had mixed the oomoo well enough but there ended up being a small spot where it didnt fully cured.

I surprisingly needed a lot less than the amount of resin I made. Since casting the mold separately was successful, I also tried casting the mold together.

This attempt wasn't as successful. It was hard to gauge how full your mold is.

Nonetheless, here is the final casted object: an oloid that can roll on a table similar to a round object.
