assignment - to cut stuff with computer

for week2 project, I am making myself a hat

step1_measure my head

my head is round with a diameter of 7.6", a circumference of 24"

step2_design

I used rhino to design the hat

the hat has two 2 layers, one for structure one for comfort

both are perforated for natural ventilation

step3_unroll surfaces

as i start designing the hat, i added a third layer for the look

the structure layer will be cardboard lasercut while the inner and outer layer will be elastic materials cut on a vinlycutter

step4_material thickness check

i used chipboard because of its structural strength

step5_kerf check

the circle diameter is 0.591" in CAD, it turned out to be 0.581", therefore, the kerf is 0.01/2=0.005"

step6_file prep

the lasercut file has multiple lasers and settings

the outer layer is transparent and perforated, you can see the structure layer

the inner layer has a cool color, also perforated for ventilation

they can also work as a bowl

i wish the hat can be a bit bigger :)

a brim that helps block sunlight will also be nice :)
