Assignments

Hello, my name is Tom Owens and I am one of 23 National Security Fellows at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government for the AY 05-06.  My research is focused on Homeland Security and the role of military support to civil authorities during the response to national incidents.

BACKGROUND

Most of my Electrical Engineering experience is quite dated.  After graduating from Cornell in '83 & '84, I worked for Motorola in Austin for a year.  I primarily worked in the Advanced Products R&D Lab which shared space in the MOS-8 Fab.  In 1985, I joined the NY Air National Guard to become a pilot.  Prior to coming to Cambridge, I was flying the F16 in Syracuse, NY.  I have experience in home building and simple CAD design.  Just recently we added an addition to our '91 post & beam timber-frame home in NY.

The Media Lab has been an interest of mine for a long while and wearable computing is what initially attracted me to following the Lab's research.  FabLabs focus on building things that can make the world a much better place is what captured my curiosity and interest in this course.  I am very excited about How to Make (almost) Anything!
