This week we ran a couple of prints which have variable z-heights, We first started with a simple grid distorted in the z-axis, investigating the line density and resultant overspray.
The overspray is strongly evident within the 2nd print of Jimi Hendrix, it seems as though the overspray has a dominant direction: always spraying to the left side of the print-head.
Next, we swapped out tools momentarily to mill out a small sample of a topo landscape - we used a 1/8th inch ball end bit for the roughing and then printed topo lines on top of that. This swap of tools was a time consuming process and so we've redesigned the tool mounts for easy swaps.
At the moment, we are not using the print-head to its fullest potential as its still operating more as a drawing tool rather than a printing tool. Regardless, these mini exercises have been a good foundational start for what's to come next.
We're currently looking into generating images to bits and a means of automating that.
As a start will be focused on generating binary images containing one bit per pixel. (0=black and 1=white)
