WEEK 05 / UPDATED PROJECT PROPOSAL

HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY.

Our assignment was to keep making BIG things and to update our
initial project proposal by answering the following questions:

01. What's the goal?
02. What's the prior art?
03. What are the systems and components?
04. What questions will you need to answer?

01. PROJECT GOAL

To create a new interactive GHOST CHAIR which appears unassuming but is activated by the
user's proximity and body weight.

02. INSPIRATION + PRIOR ART

The formal inspiration: Philippe Starck's Ghost Armchair [2002]

ORG

The effect of arraying LED's on the inside of a wood veneer: Matt Blackshaw's The Cube [2010]

Sensors + Radio Signals: Meejin Yoon's Light Drift installaion for FAST Festival [2011]

03. SYSTEMS + COMPONENTS

GHOST CHAIR will involve the construction of the physical form and electronics casing
and the design and fabrication of a series of circuits needed to take inputs from sensors
and output different LED configurations.

Using this last week's make something BIG assignment I feel good about the overall
construction and form of the chair. My next iteration would be to consider how the backrest
and seat would house the sensors and arrays of LEDs.

04. QUESTIONS

My next big hurdle for the upcoming weeks is working on the hardware components for my
GHOST CHAIR to come to life.

01. Circuit design???

02. What kinds of sensors can I use?

03. How will this array of LEDs be programmed to output different configurations based on
sensor inputs?

04. How will the sensor from the seat communicate with the array of LEDs in the backrest?

05. How will this hardware effect how the casing and light mounting is designed?
